A MISSIONS MOMENT
The theme verse for our upcoming second Missions
conference is Galatians 6:10, “As we have therefore opportunity, let
us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household
of faith.” The phrase “as we have therefore opportunity” implies a
time when we are alive and able to do a task for the Lord. It is an
epoch of time that will come and go.
God commands us to “do good unto all men.” Our natural tendency is to be
selfish and treat others with slander and ugliness; thus, this
exhortation is given. This phrase means doing good deeds to all those
whom we come in contact with – for no other reason than to reflect
Christ’s love. It also implies sharing a verbal Gospel witness to all
those around us.
“Especially unto them who are of the household of faith” likewise
commands us to go against our fleshly desires and, above all other
people, be helpful to our Christian brothers and sisters. This involves
prayers, kind and encouraging words, and doing that which is necessary
to meet the physical needs of our fellow Christians.
Today, this week, this month, and this year we have opportunity with
each breath of life to “do good” first and foremost to our Christian
brothers and sisters, but also to “all men” – the lost of this world.
As I reflect on this verse I am reminded of another verse, James 4:14, “For
what is your life? It is even a vapor that appeareth for a little time,
and then vanisheth away.” Yes, our opportunities are now, but as
life is fleeting – so are our opportunities of service for the Lord.
Will you consider “doing good” through foreign missions where untold
millions have never had an opportunity to hear? Daniel T. Borkert, M.D.
